The Thistle travelled to Midlothian to face the side that dumped them out of the Logan Cup at the quarter final stage and that went on to win the trophy last season.
In a game that had periods of flair football, rough challenges and dubious refereeing, it proved entertaining for the spectators.
It was the home side that took the lead on 18mins. From a long throw into the box, the ball was headed clear by G Deans. From 22yards, the M&E striker unleashed a spectacular volley that rocketed into the top corner. It wasn’t until the 40th minute that another goal was scored, when Orr capitalised on a loose ball following a melee in the box.
Into the second half, despite some good opportunities for both sides, there was only one goal that separated the teams at the final whistle. McCrae fired through the keeper’s legs from close range following a fine run down the left wing on 70mins.
With two good chances created by Orr to make the victory more convincing, the striker blasted wide on both occasions. The Thistle rode their luck with seconds to go when a challenge in the box could have resulted in a M&E penalty.
